USDA Cloud Contract awarded to Unisys

Unisys has been awarded a massive cloud computing contract, which is worth more than $232 million, by the US Department of Agriculture.

Unisys Corporation has been awarded a massive cloud computing contract by the United States Department of Agriculture. The contract is worth more than $242 million and requires Unisys to provide secure application modernization services for the support of initiatives such as their Rural Development Comprehensive Loan Program.

The contract was awarded to Unisys Corporation following a bidding competition. The organization has also performed similar work under a previous contract that it was awarded back in 2010.

Included in this contract are requirements like maintenance, operations, and application modernization. Unisys Corporation will supposedly leverage an Amazon Web Services-based DevOps environment. This environment will allow for quick installation, preparation, and integration with the company’s cloud-based infrastructure, according to Unisys.

The U.S. government’s cloud-first mandate urges federal agencies to prioritize cloud services ahead of on-premise options.  This is a result of the government’s drive to reduce its infrastructure footprint. The first AWS Government Competency and the AWS GovCloud Skill Program was launched by Amazon Web Services in June to help agencies find AWS cloud partners with the appropriate specializations

Unisys will support many Rural Development programs besides CLP that provide financial assistance and economic development. A sum of $38 million will be administered by USDA Rural Development in loans and grants this fiscal year.

Unisys Corporation said that it was pleased by the government organization’s selection of its services, and will strive to work in their support for such services and missions initiated by the government. It also said that this program will help them develop and maintain software systems needed for the essential loans so that they may help improve the economy and quality of life in rural America.
